Yiorgos Fakanas: Domino (2007)

The name of Yiorgos Fakanas has been flying around the bass community since an article in which Anthony Jackson named him as one of his favorite bassists. After receiving this CD I can attest (like you needed ME too after that) that, yes, Yiorgos is a stunning player! It always astounds me how much talent there is in the world that we are yet to be made aware of in the US. You would do well to check Yiorgos out!
There are certainly some familiar names on this CD. Dave Weckl and Mike Stern as well as Bob Franceschini, for example. Although, as you might expect from the lineup, the music sounds very much like the Dave Weckl band with a Greek influence. That said, it is perfectly recorded, musically stimulating, the playing is of an astounding caliber all around and this is some of the best groove-fusion music I've heard in quite some time. Yiorgos' playing is stunning. You can bet I, for one, will be transcribing some of his lines and solos (as I suggest you all do!).
Bottom line:
If you're not a fan of the Mike Stern band or Dave Weckl band, this is probably not your thing, but if you're like me and love the way these guys play and love to transcribe some stellar grooves, you absolutely can't go wrong here. In this style, it just doesn't get better than this!--Bass Musician Magazine

By Request - Joe Carmouche: A Touch Of Jazz (2000)

What distinguish an excellent guitar album? Catchy melodies, which hook in the memory like Chieli Minucci's Endless Summer or professional performance as Mark Whitfield showcases on numerous albums or just the beautiful sound of a special guitar? All of the above and more is the answer. The music must be emotional, accessible and with the certain groove.
Joe Carmouche's album has a sensible approach to this task. One remarks Joe's passion for his guitar and he appreciates to combine improvisations with melodies.
It seems, that a lot of musicians of todays Contemporary Jazz scene prefer to cover famous melodies instead of playing in own tunes. The tune freshens up when Joe begins his jazzy improvisations with slick guitar licks.
On Caribbean Nights Joe develops a fiery uptempo guitar solo. He is an expert in producing a live atmosphere even in the studio.
Inner City Blues is a cover version of Marvin Gaye's tune he released first time on his legendary album What's Going On (1971). James Reason brilliants on keyboard followed by Joe spectacular guitar solo.
Betcha By Golly Wow is a slow contemplative guitar interplay with a sensible intonation. This is a cover version of the brilliant album The Stylistics, the album which was the starting point of the leading Philly Soul group in 1971.
The live version of Foreplay with a duration of 8:02 minutes is a good platform to manifest Joe 's live performance qualities. I strongly recommend Joe's club presentations, which are really unbeatable.
One For The Road, the final tune, is dedicated in memory of Zachary Breaux and Clarence "Grissle" Hollimon. Connoisseurs of this guitarists will get with A Touch Of Jazz an excellent continuation to the former music of these unfortunatedly too early died guitar masters.
Smooth jazz guitar at its finest. Joe Carmouche has opened for Kenny Burrell, Michael Franks and Joe Sample.

Chieli Minucci & Special EFX: Without You (2010) [2 cd]

Guitarist, composer, and arranger Chieli Minucci is the leader of the Grammy-nominated jazz-fusion group Special EFX, which he co-founded with the late George Jinda in 1984. A major force on the jazz and world music scene for 25 years, Special EFX’s newest release, Without You is a diverse collection of jazz-fusion, world rhythms, and the effortlessly flowing guitar artistry that Chieli (key-eh-lee) is known for. A true sound-tapestry, blending layers of sound and harmonic texture, Without You is an instant classic.
This brilliant double CD collection of tracks features the original Special EFX lineup of favorites - drummer Lionel Cordew, bassist Jerry Brooks, keyboardist Jay Rowe, and vocalist/percussionist Philip Hamilton - plus many brilliant guest artists, including keyboardist Jeff Lorber, violinist Karen Briggs, keyboardist Lao Tizer, vocalist Will Brock, bassist Dave Anderson, and violinist Alan Grubner.
Special EFX is one of the most prominent world fusion groups of the era. During the course of the band’s phenomenal rise to the top of the jazz charts, they released 25 CDs, including Chieli’s 8 solo releases and a live concert DVD. Seminal songs like “Daybreak”, “Cruise Control”, “Bella” and “Seduction” were among their chart-topping hits. This extraordinary super group takes their vibrant and exciting sound to the next level on its new Without You release, which encompasses diverse and eclectic sounds ranging from jazz fusion to world beat, pop vocals and rock-tinged arrangements.
Chieli’s latest project, the Special EFX CD Without You highlights an extraordinary career and is essential listening for his legions of fans. Songs like “Love’s Lost in Translation” blends Philip Hamilton’s mellifluous voice with romance and angst in an exotic, world music setting. Long-time fans may recognize parts of “The Night Is Ours”, which is a completely re-written version of Special EFX’s 1982 signature song “Sambuca Nights”. Fans will also be entranced with “Hushabye”, which was originally released as the instrumental “Sweet Surrender” but has been transformed with the addition of the soulful vocals of Will Brock. And for George Jinda fans, the tune “Man with a Drum” captures his original percussion sounds.
Talented virtuosos Jeff Lorber, Karen Briggs and Lao Tizer are featured on tracks that may become the “new” classics for Special EFX. “Legendary keyboardist Jeff Lorber is a brilliant musical collaborator on ‘Mountina Jameroon’. I’m excited to have his high intensity electric jazz flavorings on the new Special EFX CD,” says Chieli.“I brought Karen Briggs into the project after hearing her amazing violin work on Yanni’s Live at the Acropolis,” explains Chieli. “She takes the violin to another dimension on our songs ‘Lakeside’ and ‘Wonderboy.’”
Special guest Lao Tizer brings his powerful piano vibe to the tracks “Bacchanalia” and “Afterglow”. “I discovered Lao when he was 19 years old and we’ve been collaborating ever since. I knew his high-energy, unique piano work would bring another level of emotion to these Special EFX
songs,” says Chieli.
Showcasing truly incredible musicianship, Special EFX’s captivating jazz fusion textures and progressive new age twists take listeners on an uplifting musical ride they’ll never forget. “Without You” showcases the band’s special gift for combining harmony, feeling, and flawless technique with remarkable passion.

Dino Saluzzi: El Encuentro (2010)

Dino Saluzzi’s first live album for ECM finds the Argentinean bandoneon master at Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, presenting new orchestral compositions. Dino himself is principal soloist throughout the recording, joined by Anja Lechner and brother Felix Saluzzi at points along the way.
The flowing music, with strings shadowing the movement of the bandoneon, extends the spirit of Dino’s “storytelling” solo works such as “Andina” (to which the piece “Plegaria Andina” makes reference). Dino says, “a lot can be told using few elements. The music should not be too rational. It has to brim with innocence.” “On ‘El Encuentro’” writes Javier Magistris in the liner notes, “the collaboration with cellist Anja Lechner and saxophonist Felix Saluzzi adds a new chapter of beauty in a wider and more complex structure. The soliloquies of the three main characters intertwine prodigiously, like a naturally-flowing current, each voice attaining its greatest expressive splendour by interacting with the harmonic structures.”
The project was set in motion by Amsterdam-based writer/producer Gustavo Pazos, who had visited Saluzzi in Buenos Aires in 2004 to prepare a radio portrait of the bandoneonist-composer, and got to hear some of Dino’s works-in-progress. Holland’s Metropole Orchestra subsequently expressed interest, and with the support of NPS Radio it was possible to present the music in Amsterdam. Pazos points out that the Metropole Orchestra has “fulfilled a major cultural role in the Netherlands” with its long history of encouraging musicians outside the classical mainstream.
“El Encuentro” marked a first-time encounter for composer and orchestra (and both the Metropole Orchestra and conductor Jules Buckley make ECM debuts here) but the cast of soloists draws on some long-standing playing associations, in the case of Dino and Felix more than 60 years of collaborations. They started making music together as children, and today Felix frequently works with his brother in Dino’s “family band” projects, as heard on albums including “Mojotoro” and “Juan Condori”. Felix also plays in a new group with Dino and cellist Anja Lechner, a trio whose formation was a direct result of the shared experience of playing together on “El Encuentro”.
Anja Lechner has worked closely with Dino since the mid-1990s, beginning with the “Kultrum” alliance between Saluzzi and the Rosamunde Quartet, a collaboration which in several respects prefigured “El Encuentro”. She has also toured widely in duo with the bandoneonist, and recorded with him on “Ojos Negros” in 2006.
“El Encuentro” (The Encounter) is released in time for Dino’s 75th birthday on May 21st, 2010.
Earlier this year the Saluzzi brothers and Anja Lechner appeared as soloists with the Musikkollegium Winterthur, performing Dino’s “Sinfonia Concertante”.
In July 2010, Dino is the subject of a special ECM focus at the Atina jazz Festival in Italy. There, he will be joined on stage by Felix Saluzzi, Anja Lechner, John Surman, Palle Mikkelborg, Rosario Bonaccorso and UT Gandhi.

The Manhattan Transfer: The Offbeat of Avenue (1991)

Other than a recreation of the Miles Davis/Gil Evans recording of "Blues for Pablo" (with trumpeter Mark Isham filling in for Miles), this program by the Manhattan Transfer is completely outside of jazz. It is doubtful if Sarah Vaughan would have much enjoyed "Sassy" (due to the reliance on electronic rhythms) or the poppish material heard throughout the date, despite the talents of the singers. Other than "10 Minutes Till the Savages Come" and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's guest appearance on "Blue Serenade," the set is disappointingly forgettable. - AMG

Robert Walter: Cure All (2008)

Robert Walter has no problem getting into funky, down-home soul-jazz when he wants to, but the organist/keyboardist/pianist also has his intellectual side. He obviously appreciates the soul-jazz that B-3 icons like Jimmy Smith, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, and Jack McDuff offered in the '60s, but he has also shown his appreciation of Medeski, Martin & Wood as well as the post-bop and fusion that Larry Young explored after he moved beyond soul-jazz. And both sides of Walter's artistry serve him well on Cure All. If Walter (who forms a trio with bassist James Singleton and drummer Johnny Vidacovich) set out to offer a healthy balance of intellect and funkiness, he achieves that goal on enjoyable tracks such as "Maple Plank," "Snakes and Spiders," "Measure Up," and "Coupe." Most of the material is more cerebral than a typical soul-jazz performance would be, but at the same time, Cure All is less cerebral than Medeski, Martin & Wood's albums. Whether he is on organ, acoustic piano, or electric keyboards, Walter usually avoids becoming either too simple or too abstract. Not that there is anything wrong with either simplicity or abstraction; the straightforward, groove-loving bluesiness of Big John Patton and Gene Harris is every bit as valid a part of jazz as the most challenging pieces that John Medeski has had to offer. But Walter obviously wanted to avoid going too far in either direction, and that outlook yields consistently worthwhile results on Cure All.
