This recording celebrates the 50th anniversary of the legendary Kenya album by the founders of the Afro-Cuban jazz movement, Machito & His Afro-Cubans. One of the last surviving musicians who performed on the original date, legendary conguero and NEA Jazz Master Candido, is featured as a special guest on three tracks.
A four-hour PBS documentary Latin Music U.S.A., will premiere in October 2009 and will feature Bobby Sanabria and Candido prominently in the first episode. This nationwide televised series will also be shown in England via the BBC.
Bobby Sanabria's last CD, Big Band Urban Folktales, was nominated for a Grammy Award and hit #1 on the jazz radio charts. This recording goes beyond the original in that it features new arrangements performed in a live concert setting, featuring an orchestra made up of young lions under Sanabria's baton.
